Varee International at Varee Chiangmai School had the honour to host the first Varee Model United Nations 2011 (VMUN 2011) on 29th November 2011 which was an inaugural conference between delegates from 7 international schools in Chiang Mai with committee chairs from Chiang Mai University. With the collaboration from MUN coordinators from international schools, students were part of the conference as delegates representing more than 70 countries discuss on the topic “The Global Economy”.
Varee Model United Nations has welcomed 7 international schools in Chiang Mai including Varee International at Varee Chiangmai School, Prem Tinsulanonda International School, Lanna International School Thailand, Grace International School, Chiang Mai International School, American Pacific International School and Nakornpayap International School. Furthermore, it is an honour to also welcomed student participants and Associate Professor Pairat Trakarnsirinont, Head of Division of Public Administration from Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration, Chiang Mai University as the committee chairs and observers for Varee Model United Nations with the topic “The Global Economy”. During the conference, the floor was open for all delegates of each country and committee to debate on the topic to vote on the final resolution. This was an essential experience for students in the Model United Nations to learn to research, debate, and express intuitive thoughts and opinions as well as building the skills for public speaking, problem solving and build the awareness on current global issues.
For an opening ceremony of Varee Model United Nations 2011, guest speakers both from United Nations Regional Centre in Bangkok and from Chiang Mai have given inspirational speeches on the Green Economy and encourage all students to continue to succeed in their study and to recognise the importance in understanding global issues. Guest speakers including Dr. Dechen Tsering, Deputy Regional Director of United Nations Environmental Programme (Asia Pacific Region), Dr. Ken Ohashi, Former Country Director at the World Bank for the Horn of Africa, and Dr. Sudip Ranjan Basu, Economic Affairs Officer of United Nations Economics and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific have given delegates with fresh perspectives on current status of the global economy and the motivation for student to solve world issues as if they were an ambassador to the United Nations.
At the closing ceremony with a closing speech given by Ajarn Varee Patravanich, Director of Varee Chiangmai School, awards and certificates were given out for the Best delegate of the Conference, Best delegates of the Committee, and Outstanding delegates by Ajarn Varee Patravanich and Dr. Sudip Ranjan Basu. Best Delegate of the Conference was awarded to Napassorn Chanrotchanaphan from Grace International School. Varee Chiangmai School is hoping to have given all students with the opportunity as their first step toward future success with this valuable experience. As the preparation for the school to progress its way to become ASEAN Education Hub by 2015 and to promote educational standard of Thailand, the conference has its objective to promote awareness and to develop thinking process in young learners as well as to keep themselves update with current global issues. This can be an essential step toward the development to move forward with the education that meet the national and global standards at Varee Chiangmai School.
